We’ve all heard the saying that a picture paints a thousand words. If this saying is true, just imagine what the addition of an image could do for your blog post! The use of an image in a blog attracts the attention of the reader, especially if it’s well placed. This not only increases the number of views your content will have but also increases the amount of time a person stays on your website, which hopefully results in that viewer sharing your content.
Importance of Images for Blogs

Why Blogs Need Images

Images also serve as content for your website. Because of this, it’s important to use high-quality images. And bonus points if you use images of your own instead of stock photos. Readers want to see originality, but the image you choose should be relevant to the topic of your post. Images should be placed in either the header or throughout the text. A study proved that 100 of the highest-ranking blogs on the internet had at least one image per 350 words of text, and the use of a caption is also important, but only if you think that your reader will find it to be relevant. Blog posts containing relevant images have 94% more total views than posts that do not contain any images. This high percentage can be contributed to the SEO benefits that an image can provide for your blog. In order to take full advantage of this SEO opportunity, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. ALT tags are things that help a search engine to identify the context of your photo. Google cannot look at a picture of a baby laughing and realize that it’s a baby laughing. In order to help the search engines, utilize ALT tags, for example, alt=”laughing baby”. Another thing to keep in mind is the file name of the image. It’s crucial that the name is descriptive yet simple and contains a few keywords, but is not overstuffed. The keywords should be separated by the use of hyphens, not spaces or underscores. Reducing the file size of the image to improve the loading time will also be beneficial.

Guidelines for Using Images in Blogs

  • Use a relevant image
  • Create the right file name for the image
  • Reduce the file size for faster loading
  • Add a caption if you think it would be relevant to your reader
  • Utilize image ALT tags
