Earth Day Challenge

TheeDigital sponsored and participated in the first annual EarthShare NC Earth Day Corporate Challenge on April 16th. We helped a non-profit, networked, crushed rocks, and had a lot of fun.

Helping the Community

Our assigned project for Earth Day was to build a retaining wall for the Durham non-profit SEEDS to put their new chicken coop into. We started the afternoon sorting cement blocks into piles. The guys – and two of the girls – used a sledgehammer to break cement slabs into smaller, useable pieces. We dug a trench to use as a foundation for the wall. Once the slabs were broken up and the trench dug, we built a three level rock wall that was 64 feet long. The base for SEEDS chicken coop was completed by our team after only a few hours of work.

Supporting a Non-Profit

SEEDS is a non-profit urban sanctuary in downtown Durham focused on promoting sustainable agriculture, organic gardening, and food security. They run three gardens to help educate children and adults about growing their own food, composting, and more. They donate food to local homeless shelters from the garden and sell produce, herbs, and flowers at the Durham Farmers Market to raise money for their efforts.

Earth Day Corporate Challenge

This is the first year EarthShare NC held the Corporate Challenge Earth Day program, and we were proud to not only participate but be a financial sponsor for the event as well. Participating companies such as SAS, Duke Energy, Triangle Community Foundation and NetFriends helped on the site of three different non-profits in the Triangle. After the event, we all celebrated at a social in downtown Durham. Each of the 11 teams that participated gave a short speech about the work they had done for the day. Our team won two awards from EarthShare NC for our participation in the event. The Spirit Award was for our matching outfits, enthusiasm, energy, and great speech given at the social event. That prize was a real treat – 2 dozen cupcakes from downtown Durham’s Cupcake Bar. We also received the Corporate Participation Award for having the highest percentage of employees volunteer for the day of all teams participating.
