Heading tags and title tags are the norm when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), but have you ever thought about how and why they are important to SEO?
SEO is an internet marketing strategy that uses different approaches to help a webpage be more noticeable to search engines, increasing the visibility for potential users or customers on the internet.
The internet is a vast cloud of information; sorting through that information can be a difficult chore when searching for a specific subject. Therefore, internet marketing professionals use search engine optimization to help users find the information.
Just like a customer searching for a specific book in a bookstore, SEO helps provide a digital map to users looking for the correct type of webpage. This is done with headers and tags.
What are SEO Tags?
When it comes to the internet, there are millions of pages of information. Sorting through all the pages can be a problematic, but tags help search engines identify specific pages or categories that would best fit the results.
Just like the store map of a bookstore helps customers find the right book they want to read, SEO creates a digital map that helps a user decide which page they are interested in or will be interested in. This is done through the usage of different tags with microdata that have optimization attributes that allow search engines to notice them more.
Title Tags
Sifting through different books in a pile can be pretty stressful, but reading the title of a book can help you decide if you will buy it or not. Book titles often foreshadow the content of a book, so reading a title can help you decide if you’re ready to read it or move on to the next. This is true with a title tag.
Title tags are the web page’s title. This helps the reader know the overall topic of the section. For this, title tags are published in the search engine results page (SERP) to allow a user to know the topic when searching in a search engine before clicking to open the page.
Header Tags
Just like a chapter in a book, headers are topics to each section of a webpage. So, when writing content on a web page, header tags are needed to give a reader prior knowledge of what they are about to read. Search Engine Journal says, “header tags refer to the HTML markup used to distinguish headings and subheadings within your content from other types of text”
Meta Tags
Have you ever been to a book store searching for a book, so you flip the book over to read a synopsis of the book to decide if you want to buy it or not. This also holds true with meta tags. Meta tags are a short description of a webpage that is found on the search engine results.
Why is Headers Important to SEO?
When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), there are different variables that equate to your rankings; however, headers are considered one of the most important.
Header Structure Organization for SEO
When it comes to SEO, organization in headers and tags are key because it helps search engines like Google and Bing find and better understand the subject matter within a webpage.
When structuring a webpage, it is important to use a funnel style organization. This structure uses title tags and header tags, which are based on the hierarchy of H1 to H6. H1 is the title of the webpage, which is often the title tag; while H2s are the topics or the header tags. The H1 is the overall theme of the web page, while H2 are the subtopics, then H3 to H6 are the subsections of the H2. By using keywords in header tags and title tags, search engines will easily be able to tell what your page is about and show it in the search results.
